Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer congratulated Arsenal on social media after the club won the Premier League for the first time since 2004.
Arsenal were crowned English champions on Tuesday night after Manchester City drew with Bournemouth, making it mathematically impossible for City to catch the Gunners. Thousands lined the streets outside Arsenal's Emirates Stadium in north London at the full-time whistle, while footage showed Arsenal players jumping for joy at their own watch party.
Starmer's celebration message
Starmer, who faces pressure to resign from his role, stopped short of attending any celebration but wrote on X: "22 long years for the Arsenal. But finally, we're back where we belong. Champions!" He is expected to step down at some point, but it is understood he wants to do so on his own terms rather than being forced out by his own party.
Starmer is an avid Arsenal fan and has been seen at the Emirates on a number of occasions.
Backlash on social media
Some followers criticized Starmer's post. One wrote: "We? You weren't on the pitch. You didn't do anything. Just get back to writing that resignation speech, champ." Another wrote: "We've all decided you can't support Arsenal anymore."

The celebration comes after Labour suffered damaging defeats in recent by-elections, which were followed by close ally Wes Streeting resigning as health secretary.

Arsenal will pick up the Premier League trophy after Sunday's final game away at Crystal Palace, with tickets now scarce for the club's most loyal fans. Arteta and his team have endured mockery over their runners-up finishes, but this ends their wait for a first major trophy since the FA Cup they won in Arteta's first season in charge, in 2020. Arsenal's last title-winning side, led by Thierry Henry, went unbeaten through the entire 38-game season. Manchester United, Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool and Leicester City have all held the title since.
