Russian football coach Valery Ovchinnikov has spoken out in defense of Baltika head coach Andrey Talalaev after the Russian Football Union Control and Disciplinary Committee handed Talalaev a four-match Russian Premier League suspension and a fine of 400,000 roubles.
In comments reported by Russian newspaper Sovetsky Sport, Ovchinnikov described the punishment as unfair and called for Talalaev to be freed from the ban.
The disciplinary sanction was imposed on Talalaev following systematic offensive behavior during Baltika's 1-1 home draw against Rubin Kazan in the fifth round of the league season. After Chinonso Offor scored a goal for Baltika, Talalaev made an offensive gesture directed toward spectators, which he later claimed was intended as a signal to club management that his side would not lose the match.
Ovchinnikov strongly questioned the severity of the sanction, asking who holds the authority to decide the length of touchline bans and whether committee officials had confused their roles. He argued that striking a palm against a fist is not explicitly prohibited in league regulations and noted that such physical gestures are not defined as offensive in Dahl's Explanatory Dictionary.
Ovchinnikov suggested that rival interests are deliberately trying to undermine Talalaev because of his profile as a distinctive coach. He warned that repeated suspensions could prevent Talalaev from securing a managerial job at a top-tier club in the future, claiming that authorities were actively targeting him.

The four-match ban is not the first disciplinary measure facing Talalaev, who was also suspended by Russian football authorities during the previous season.
