Russian hockey legend Vyacheslav Fetisov met Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin on August 8 during a gala match in Mytishchi. Speaking to sports news outlet Sport-Express, the two-time Olympic champion described the exhibition as a celebration of hockey and a rare opportunity to share the ice with the NHL superstar.

The exhibition match took place at the conclusion of the annual Ovechkin Cup, a youth hockey tournament held in Russia. Fetisov noted that the arena was packed with supporters for the event in Mytishchi, a city located in the Moscow region.
The game brought together several prominent figures from Russian sports. Fetisov recalled meeting old friends on the ice, including NHL stars Artemi Panarin of the New York Rangers and Dmitri Orlov, alongside hockey veterans Valeri Kamensky, Alexei Morozov and Andrei Nikolishin.
Star-Studded Lineup and Match Result
The event also featured high-profile participants from outside ice hockey. Former international football players Andrei Arshavin and Aleksandr Mostovoi played in the game, along with Olympic figure skating champion Evgeni Plushenko.
Pittsburgh Penguins star forward Evgeni Malkin took on a coaching role for the first time during the contest. Malkin stood behind the bench to direct a team led by veteran winger Ilya Kovalchuk.
The high-scoring exhibition ended in an 8-8 tie after regulation time. A subsequent penalty shootout also failed to produce a winner, finishing level at 2-2.
Fetisov Advice and Contract Insights
Following the game, Fetisov shared words of encouragement with Ovechkin. Fetisov said he told the Capitals captain that second place is usually pitied by others and urged him to push all the way to the end.
Fetisov also addressed Ovechkin's recent contract status with Washington. He stated that Ovechkin's one-year contract extension had been agreed upon in advance, noting that the surrounding suspense was maintained for fans and the media.
Fetisov is widely regarded as one of the greatest defenders in ice hockey history, having won two Olympic gold medals with the Soviet Union and two Stanley Cup titles with the Detroit Red Wings. Ovechkin has captained the Washington Capitals since 2010 and led the franchise to its first Stanley Cup championship in 2018.
