Washington Capitals forward and captain Alexander Ovechkin said he plans to move back to Moscow from the United States once his hockey career ends. His comments were carried by Match TV.
Ovechkin said Moscow is his home city, and that he will live there because his family, relatives and friends are there.
New contract and NHL records
In early July, Ovechkin signed a new one-year contract with Washington. He has scored 929 goals in NHL regular-season games, the best total in league history. Including playoff games, his career total rises to 1,006 goals, the second-highest figure in NHL history. That leaves him 10 goals short of the record held by Canadian forward Wayne Gretzky.
Ties to Dynamo Moscow
Ovechkin has previously said he wants to end his playing career with Dynamo Moscow. He played for the club from 2001 to 2005 and again during the 2012-13 season, during an NHL lockout. With Dynamo, he won the Russian championship in 2005 and the Gagarin Cup in 2013.
