Paris Saint-Germain have been fined 150,000 euros by the French Professional Football League after failing to maintain their pitch at the Parc des Princes stadium in suitable condition for their scheduled opening home match last Sunday.
The LFP Competitions Commission issued the financial sanction on Friday following an official investigation into the venue. The governing body explained in a statement that the penalty was handed down under Article 501.4 of the Competitions Regulations, which establishes strict club obligations regarding playing surface quality and alternative stadium arrangements.
League officials stated that the playing surface suffered extensive damage throughout the summer due to successive heatwaves across France. The prolonged heat rendered the turf unplayable, forcing authorities to relocate the fixture at short notice.
Paris Saint-Germain, founded in 1970, are the reigning champions of Ligue 1, the top tier of French professional football. The club has played its home fixtures at the 48,000-capacity Parc des Princes, located in the 16th arrondissement of Paris, since 1974. The LFP oversees the administration of France's top professional football divisions.
Venue Reversal and Financial Dispute
Because the Parc des Princes could not be used last Sunday, the opening match was moved to the home stadium of Stade Rennais, who were originally scheduled to play the fixture as the visiting team.
Following the last-minute change, Paris Saint-Germain successfully requested that the LFP Competitions Commission validate a reversal of the return fixture. Under the approved schedule revision, the matchday 23 encounter between the two clubs will now take place at the Parc des Princes on the weekend of March 6.
Stade Rennais opposed the decision, arguing that the return match in March should also be played at their own stadium in Brittany. Club officials maintained that Rennes was not responsible for the initial venue swap and had to organize the rescheduled match under urgent conditions, estimating that the disruption would cause them to lose around 500,000 euros in revenue.
Stade Rennais, established in 1901 and based in Rennes, Brittany, also compete in Ligue 1 and host matches at Roazhon Park. Under league rules, home clubs carry operational responsibility for match organization, ticketing, and event security.
