The late motorcycle racer’s rival retired from competition to allow him to win the championship posthumously.

Motorcycle racer Filippo Rovelli has withdrawn from the final two stages of the Italian National 1000 Trophy to allow Luca Salvadori to become the posthumous winner.

Salvadori was seriously injured during the International Road Race Championship (IRRC) in Germany and died in hospital on September 15. He was leading the overall standings in the National 1000 Trophy.

– Luka, our paths have crossed on the track for many years, but we have never had as many battles as this year. Every race was a real one-on-one battle. We still had two races ahead of us, two opportunities to challenge each other again.

But today the championship ends for me. Without you, without your drive, your talent, there is no point in continuing to perform. This title is yours, Luke, and you have earned it. I would like you to be able to celebrate this in a different way, to shake hands and tell each other that you are the best. This championship is yours, and it will be yours forever,” Marca quoted Rovelli as saying.
