LIV Golf has confirmed the cancellation of its season-ending Team Championship in Michigan, making this week's Indianapolis event the 2026 finale.

LIV Golf cancels 2026 Team Championship in Michigan

LIV Golf has confirmed that its season-ending Team Championship event in Michigan has been cancelled, with this week's Indianapolis tournament concluding the 2026 season.

The decision brings forward the crowning of the 2026 champion by one week, making the stroke-play event at LIV Golf Indianapolis the final fixture of the year. In a statement released on Monday, August 17, the league confirmed that the Aramco LIV Golf Michigan tournament, originally scheduled for August 27 to 30 at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort, will no longer take place.

Part of the official LIV Golf statement read: "With LIV Golf Indianapolis serving as the final event of the season, the previously scheduled Aramco LIV Golf Michigan, originally set for August 27-30, at The Cardinal at Saint John's Resort, will not take place."

LIV Golf, the breakaway professional circuit funded by Saudi Arabia, had originally planned to conclude its 2026 campaign with the team format finale in Plymouth, Michigan. Instead, the season will end following the stroke-play competition in Indianapolis, Indiana, where players compete individually over 54 holes.

Mounting Speculation and Player Entries

Confirmation of the cancellation follows days of growing speculation across professional golf. Ticket sales for the Michigan event were quietly pulled from the official LIV Golf website on Thursday, August 13, signaling that the tournament was in jeopardy.

Reports in The Telegraph on Sunday indicated that LIV Golf players had already been informed of the decision to cancel the Michigan event. However, league officials withheld public confirmation until issuing Monday's statement.

Signs of the schedule change became clearer when English golfer Tyrrell Hatton added his name to the entry list for the DP World Tour's British Masters. The European circuit event takes place on the exact same dates, August 27 to 30, at The Belfry in England.

Hatton is set to compete at The Belfry alongside fellow LIV Golf players Tom McKibbin and Adrian Meronk. The British Masters, broadcast live on Sky Sports, is being hosted by six-time major champion Sir Nick Faldo at the renowned Warwickshire venue.

Player Reactions and Circuit Uncertainty

Prior to the official cancellation, former Open champion Cameron Smith expressed concern regarding the schedule, stating he would be "disappointed" if the Indianapolis event did not take place as planned.

The cancellation comes amid broader financial uncertainty for the league. Two-time U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau claimed that LIV Golf players were left "surprised" when Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced its intention to withdraw funding from the organization.

PGA Tour star Rory McIlroy also commented on the evolving landscape of professional golf. The four-time major winner reflected on the structure of the PGA Tour prior to LIV Golf's launch and voiced ongoing concerns regarding future tournament schedules.

Financial Future and New Investment

LIV Golf's long-term future beyond 2026 has been the subject of debate since April, when Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund announced it would end its financial backing of the league at the close of the 2026 season. The decision forced LIV Golf executives to seek alternative financing to maintain operations into 2027.

Addressing the league's future, LIV Golf Chief Executive Officer Scott O'Neil announced earlier this month that an agreement had been reached with an unnamed lead investor to secure funding for the 2027 season.

O'Neil revealed that the prospective investor had signed a term sheet, with the investment agreement set to be finalized later in August. The league has not yet publicly identified the party involved.
